Make a Mess

The theme of my last yoga class was "create." The two instructors - MiLo and Ellen - emphasized the idea that the shapes you create through yoga are works of art.

"Sometimes when I'm working on a painting, I start with making a mess,"MiLo said. "Splatter paint everywhere and get your ideas and energy out there...then you can begin to shape it into something." This is how they wanted us to approach difficult poses: "make a mess" of a pose and then work through it in order to create.

I immediately thought of life, and how - for some of us - we need to make a mess first in order to figure it all out. We need to put ourselves out there and take a risk, "splatter the paint," and do something crazy/stupid/weird so that we can work through it...so that we can understand...and create a life.
